In south India, a communist rebel group, the PWG (People's War Group), used a landmine to blow up a bus, killing 14 civilians. The rebels apparently thought the bus was full of police. The attack was apparently in response to a clash two days earlier in which the police killed five rebels. The rebels, also known as Naxalites, have been fighting the government for over 30 years, leaving over 300 people dead each year, on average. In the past few years, there have been serious attempts to negotiate an end to the rebellion.
